Fitter Mechanic

An opportunity exists within the Generation Department, Cul de Sac to fill the position of Fitter Mechanic.
JOB SUMMARY
The Fitter Mechanic will be primarily responsible in carrying out planned and unplanned mechanical inspections, repairs and maintenance on power plant engines and auxiliary equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and manuals to contribute to the safety and reliability of operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Certificate/Diploma or other relevant Certification in Diesel Mechanics plus at least two (2) years relevant experience.

JOB SUMMARY
The Fitter Mechanic will be primarily responsible in carrying out planned and unplanned mechanical inspections, repairs and maintenance on power plant engines and auxiliary equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and manuals to contribute to the safety and reliability of operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Performs regular mechanical inspections and preventive maintenance on power engines and auxiliary equipment to facilitate early problem detection, prevent unplanned downtime and minimize accidents or incidences of workplace injuries;
- Installs new and repaired equipment and carries out mechanical maintenance in accordance with quality requirements and Company policy requirements to ensure the safety and reliability of the equipment;
- Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on the Station overhead cranes to ensure optimal working condition of equipment and safety of staff;
- Troubleshoots faults on engines and generating auxiliaries to minimize interruptions resulting from equipment breakdowns/failures;
- Ensures the fire hydrant system is functional, through regular inspections and manual checks to ensure reliability and availability when required;
- Documents all tasks undertaken, to enable lessons learnt, proper maintenance tracking and monitoring of the health of the power plant engines and auxiliary equipment, decrease troubleshooting time and to minimize risk of unscheduled downtime;
- Supports a safe work environment, by actively practicing the Company’s safety and health policy and promoting a culture of safety, among others, to prevent/reduce workplace incidents, accidents or injuries;
- Updates the Garage Supervisor on operational matters by providing briefings as necessary, and submitting weekly reports to enable timely responses to issues and the implementation of improvement measures and to contribute to the Assistant Engineer’s monthly reports;
- Remains current in the knowledge of knowledge of best practices for maintenance of the power plant by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, networking, among others, to aid in the formulation of effective construction and maintenance solutions and initiatives;
- Performs any other job-related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Certificate/Diploma or other relevant Certification in Diesel Mechanics plus at least two (2) years relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Foundational knowledge of the principles of Diesel Mechanics;
- General knowledge of the Company’s and departmental guidelines and standard operating procedures;
- Ability to operate equipment, such as lathes, milling and drilling machines, thermal heating, cutting and welding equipment;
- Basic organizational and time management skills, ability to remain calm under pressure in a dynamic environment;
- Basic computer literacy skills; ability to manipulate software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentation programme;
- Effective interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals;
- Effective oral and written communication and active listening skills;
- Good numeracy skills with a high level of accuracy and keen attention to detail;
- Ability to exercise initiative, judgment, tact and diplomacy in the execution of duties;
- Effective team player with a high level of emotional intelligence;
- Ability to integrate Company core values throughout all business practices;
- Ability to effectively develop and maintain relationships with management, staff, partners and stakeholders at all levels.
