An opportunity exists within the Generation Department, Cul de Sac to fill the position of Electrical Technician.
Job Summary
The Electrical Technician will be primarily responsible for performing electrical maintenance on generators, motors and circuit breakers and associated auxiliaries, at all LUCELEC power stations in accordance with the Company’s standards, policies and procedures and regulatory requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Repairs and performs regular preventive maintenance on power station electrical equipment, to ensure devices remain in efficient working condition;
- Uses various test equipment, to ensure the electrical and control systems are functioning as designed;
- Installs and performs preventive maintenance on the LV and MV switchgear and metering devices up to the generator, including station services and neutral earthing equipment, to prevent incidences of equipment downtime and ensure the safety of the workplace;
- Maintains plant lighting systems and installs new extensions, when necessary, to prevent light degradation and higher energy costs;
- Overhauls motors for the ventilation units and radiator fans, replacing old parts and reinstalling motors, to extend the lifespan and improve performance of the equipment;
- Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on generators, to ensure optimal performance;
- Assists in servicing, testing and adjusting the protection, instrumentation, control and safety device circuits to ensure that at all times they function as intended and to support the efficient operations of the Power Stations;
- Performs preventive maintenance on the wiring system in the generating plants, to ensure the electrical lines, wirings and outlets are compliant with regulatory requirements;
- Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshoots all faulty electrical equipment and plant auxiliaries (415V and under) to ensure the safety of employees and Company facilities;
- Completes work orders related to routine, preventive and unplanned maintenance, in a timely manner, to facilitate lessons learnt and knowledge sharing, proper maintenance tracking and monitoring of the health of the system, decrease troubleshooting time, and increase equipment reliability and efficiency;
- Maintains the electronic fire alarm system in the Power Plant, ensuring the replacement, and installation of parts, when necessary, to guarantee the reliable operation of the system, for the safety of staff and assets;
- Assists in providing on-the-job training to new electrical maintenance staff, to ensure trainees understand known existing hazards, are able to identify potential hazards and risks, and understand how to deal with them, when they arise;
- Supports a safe work environment, by actively practicing the Company’s safety and health policy and promoting a culture of safety, among others, to prevent/reduce workplace incidents, accidents or injuries;
- Updates the Electrical Supervisor on work matters, by providing briefings as necessary, to enable timely responses to issues and the implementation of improvement measures;
- Remains current in the knowledge of Electrical Installation/Technology by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, networking, among others, to aid in the formulation of effective solutions and initiatives;
- Performs any other job-related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s Degree in Electro-Mechanical or Electrical Installation or other relevant certification from an accredited institution with at least three (3) years’ relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Thorough knowledge of the principles of electrical installation;
- General knowledge of the Company’s and departmental guidelines and standard operating procedures; Sound knowledge of the Electricity Supply Act;
- Broad job knowledge and/or technical expertise relevant to the job, and ability to provide sound advice;
- Ability to use tools, calibration equipment, and wires to build electrical systems;
- Ability to test existing wiring for safety and quality control;
- Ability to read blueprints to learn where panel boards, circuits, outlets and other electrical components are found or will be positioned;
- Ability to operate Overhead Crane;
- Basic organizational and time management skills, ability to remain calm under pressure in a dynamic environment;
- Basic computer literacy skills; ability to manipulate software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentation programme;
- Effective interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals;
- Effective oral and written communication and active listening skills;
- Good numeracy skills with a high level of accuracy and keen attention to detail;
- Ability to exercise initiative, judgment, tact and diplomacy in the execution of duties;
